Bears Hockey News - Sprint To The Postseason

February 2025 - Issue 22

With everyone rested from MLK weekend tournament travel, it’s time to hit the road again for the Presidents Day tournaments. While some might be hoping for a break, there are still games to be played — postseason play kicks off in March for many teams, followed by Spring Hockey and IDHT in April, not to mention tryouts in June.

This issue is heavily focused on team updates. We’re headed into the postseason shortly. The kids have been working (and playing) hard all season and there’s just so much to share. In college hockey news, the Cal Bears have had a historic run this season and just received an invitation to Regionals, keeping their championship hopes alive with a chance to play in the National Playoffs. More details on their incredible season are below. Wow.

I’ll see you at the rink!

Oakland Bears Team Updates 🏒🐻

  • The Bears 18AA team battled to the very end but fell just short of a playoff spot after going 2-1 in their final CAHA weekend in Simi Valley. They earned strong wins over the Jr. Flyers (6-3) and the Mariners (5-0) but fell to the Ice Hawks (1-5), ending their postseason hopes. Despite the setback, the team put together a solid season, finishing with a 5-5-2 record and staying in the playoff hunt until the last game.

The Bears head to Dallas this weekend for their final road trip before wrapping up the season with a three-game homestand against the Santa Clarita Flyers at the end of the month. It’s been a hard-fought season, and the team looks to close it out on a high note.

  • The Bears 16AA team had a solid showing in Simi Valley last weekend, finishing with a 1-2-1 record. They opened with a 5-2 win, followed by a tie against a strong Jr. Ducks team. Their final two games were close battles that didn’t go their way, but the Bears proved they can run with the big dogs, even if they’re not taking them down this year.

The boys now look to Las Vegas for their final Presidents Day tournament, aiming to finish the season on a high note.

  • The Bears 14B team remains in the fight for a playoff spot despite tough losses to Tri Valley and the Jr. Sharks, which were critical in securing third place. The team currently sits in fourth place and has one more opportunity to clinch a postseason berth when they face the top-seeded team from the 14B Flight 2 division at a yet-to-be-determined date.

Before that challenge, the Bears will travel to Los Angeles this weekend to compete in the Presidents Day Tournament, looking to build momentum for their final push toward the playoffs.

  • The Bears 12AA team has had a busy February, finishing 2-2 with wins over Jr. Sharks 12AA-2 and Tri-Valley 12A, and losses to Jr. Sharks 12AA-1 and Jr. Sharks 12AA-3. While the results didn’t affect the standings, as the team has already clinched 2nd place and secured a playoff spot, the competition in the division has grown incredibly tight. Every team has shown improvement, and postseason wins will be earned through focus and teamwork. The games are sure to be exciting.

  • The Bears 12B team has also secured a playoff spot. The team had only one regulation game in February - a decisive win against the Black Stars. The kids head to Las Vegas this weekend to tune up for the postseason.

  • The Bears 10B team had an unforgettable experience in the Silver Stick final in Pelham, Ontario last month. Unfortunately, illness affected several players, limiting the team as they faced off against other Silver Stick regional champions. The kids head to Los Angeles this weekend for a Presidents Day tournament. They clinched a playoff spot in their NORCAL division weeks ago and have also locked down first place.

  • The East Bay Bears Varsity high school season came to an end with a forfeit in the first round of the playoffs. This marked the team’s second forfeit of the season against Capital Thunder, both due to scheduling conflicts that couldn’t be resolved. The first forfeit dropped the team to third place, forcing them into a playoff game while their AA players were away for the final CAHA weekend. The second ultimately ended their season. It was a tough way to go out, especially for the team’s four seniors.

Despite the challenges, the Varsity team showed incredible resilience throughout the season, frequently playing shorthanded. In five of their thirteen games, they had eight or fewer skaters, including an unforgettable 3-0 shutout victory with just five skaters in attendance. The team’s effort and grit were undeniable, and their hard work should be commended.

A special thank you goes out to the team’s graduating seniors: Jack Dougherty, TJ Cronin, Theo Timpson, and Tommy John. Their dedication, leadership, and contributions to the Bears program have left a lasting impact. Best of luck in the future, and thank you for everything you’ve done for the Bears!

  • The East Bay Bears JV-C team defeated in the Oilers last weekend in the semi-finals to advance to the final against rival Tri Valley. The championship game takes place on February 22 at 3:15pm at Sharks Ice in San Jose.

Cal Hockey Battles Through Broken Bones and Illness, Secures Regional Invite 🏒💪

Cal Hockey wrapped up a grueling playoff run in Washington, overcoming illness and injuries while making history along the way. The journey began with back-to-back wins over Oregon’s D1 team (6-5 in OT/SO on Feb. 1 and 3-2 on Feb. 2), but a team-wide illness took hold during the PAC-8 Playoffs. Despite missing key players, Cal secured victories over UCSD (7-2) and USC (3-2 in OT) before falling to UW in the championship game, 7-5, ending a record-breaking 27-0 season. The team played through immense adversity, including injuries to top defensemen and multiple forwards. Forward Kodai Mizuno suffered a broken clavicle during the USC game, leaving Cal without its entire first line for the semifinals and championship. In the final minutes of the title game, trailing 6-5, Cal pulled its goalie in an effort to force overtime, but UW capitalized with an empty-net goal to seal the win.

The team’s success was recognized at the PAC-8 Awards Banquet on Feb. 7, where Head Coach Devin Cox was named PAC-8 Coach of the Year and will lead the PAC-8 All-Star Team at the ACHA All-Star Tournament in Philadelphia this April. Goalie Aidan Comeau (#80), forward Kodai Mizuno (#9), and defenseman Sean Dolim (#88) earned First-Team All PAC-8 honors, with Comeau and Mizuno also securing All PAC-8 Rookie Team recognition. Despite the tough loss in the playoffs, Cal’s performance throughout the season earned the team an invitation to the ACHA D2 Regionals, keeping championship hopes alive.

Cal Hockey’s remarkable 27-1 season has gained media attention, with coverage from Sports Illustrated and KTVU Fox News 2 San Francisco. With Regionals ahead, the team remains focused and determined to extend its historic season.
