Oakland Bears News - Issue 10

#10, October, 2023

Welcome to the October edition of the Oakland Bears Newsletter. The regular season is in full swing with a first round of games already complete. This month we highlight 12U Sadie Wielandt in the player profile section. For those of us with youth players, have you and your child completed the CAHA Adult Anti-Bullying & Inclusivity Training Module yet? If not, make sure to complete it by the end of the month to maintain your player's eligibility. Although it's one more task on our already packed schedules, it's crucial to periodically revisit and strengthen a culture of positivity, respect, and inclusion. Hockey is an intense sport and we're a passionate community. Setting a good example is something we should all strive for. This month, I'm reviving the "Know the Rules" section to focus on the importance of mouthguards. Over the past weekend, I noticed a few kids in the penalty box because they had forgotten theirs. It seems that even the officials—whom we appreciate for their service—might not be aware of the warning clause applicable to first offenses. So, this section offers valuable information for everyone involved.I'll see you at the rink-Jason Dearborn

Player ProfileSadie Wielandt, Bears 12BB

Sadie Wielandt, a 12-year-old multi-position player, has been a fixture in the Oakland Bears community for four years. While she serves as a solid defense for the Bears' 12BB team, she showcases her versatility by playing various positions for the Lady Blue Devils 12AAA team in the Pacific Girls Hockey League. Here's more on her journey and experiences with her teams.

Early Beginnings

Sadie's introduction to hockey came from family and a bit of encouragement. "I grew up watching my older brother play and never had an interest until Coach Tracy convinced me to go to a Try Hockey event," she recalls. Since the age of 8, Sadie has enjoyed the camaraderie of playing hockey and the excitement of scoring goals.

Favorite Hockey Memories

When it comes to standout moments, Sadie doesn't hesitate. "Every tournament ever," she says, emphasizing the dual joy of playing the game and spending time with friends.

Team Spirit

The atmosphere among the 12u-2 teammates is energetic and positive, according to Sadie. "We give each other good feedback and try to stay positive," she notes, describing a team environment that's both fun and supportive.

Community

Being part of the Oakland Bears means more than just playing hockey for Sadie. "Being an Oakland Bear gives me new opportunities to grow on the ice as well as off," she says. Through the Bears and the Lady Blue Devils, she's not only honed her skills but also formed close friendships.

Future Goals

This season, Sadie is setting big goals but also just looking to enjoy time on the ice. “I’d love to go pro and have fun,” she remarked.

Advice for New Players

For those just setting out on their hockey journey, Sadie's advice is straightforward: "Keep working hard. Don't compare yourself to other players. You'll get there someday."With her dedication and team spirit, Sadie Wielandt is a rising talent to watch on the Oakland Bears this season and beyond.
