Community News & Updates
#2, October, 2022
I hope everyone had fun playing the first game of the season. I’d also like to welcome 8U families to the mailing list and wish them luck at the Mite Jamboree in Livermore this Saturday!
On to the updates!
Keep it Positive
Hockey fans are a passionate group at all levels of play. Loudly supporting your team is excellent, but verbally abusing officials, coaches, or the opposing team is not. If you disagree with a referee’s call, a coach’s strategy, or a player's performance, remember they’re on the ice doing their best.
Abuse is the number one reason officials quit. Poor fan behavior can result in spectator ejections or even stricter restrictions. So please, keep it positive and RESPECT THE GAME.
Think you can do it better? Become an official. Contact NorHOA to earn your stripes.
Staff Spotlight
Brandon Reed, 10UB Coach
Brandon fell in love with hockey growing up in eastern Washington State. He picked up the game after joining his high school team and quickly worked his way onto the varsity squad where he ended up playing in the State Division II Championship. Brandon continued to play adult league and roller hockey throughout his collegiate career at Washington State University. He graduated with a Bachelors in Civil Engineering and a Masters degree in Environmental Engineering.
Brandon continues to play regular drop-in games at OIC, adult league in the evening, and the occasional Gretzky Hour.
As the 10UB coach, he is excited to share his love of the game with the next generation and help make lifelong memories. His approach is “to create an atmosphere where failure is okay, where our Bears can be creative and try things outside of their comfort zone.”
When asked what he enjoys about the season so far, Brandon replied, “Watching the team progress so quickly. …every practice I see something click for one of the kids.” A favorite moment was “talking with the team before their first game in Santa Rosa. It’s everyone’s first time on a travel team and they were nervous and excited, and it definitely brought me back to my playing days!”
One fun fact about Brandon is he met one of the Olsen twins at Knott's Berry Farm as a teen.
Take note: Favorite ice cream is mint chocolate chip.

Supporting Hockey Families
Hockey is in the top three most expensive sports. The Oakland Bears Hockey Foundation relies on donations to fund ice time and tournament fees for scholarship players within the greater Oakland area. Your tax deductible donation helps ensure everyone can suit up.
